Este livro apareceu pela primeira vez em 1849, durante o renascimento do catolicismo inglês que se seguiu ao Relief Act de 1829. Ele contém três traduções anônimas de biografias modernas. O primeiro, publicado em latim em Colônia em 1617 por Sebastiano Berettari (1543-1622) e aqui traduzido de uma versão manuscrita italiana de 1670, centra-se no missionário jesuíta no Brasil, José Anchieta (1534-97), elogiando seu 'talento e diligência nos assuntos humanos' e suas 'virtudes heróicas'. A segunda, baseada no relato de Caspar Peter Lull, publicado em latim e alemão em 1682, descreve brevemente a vida da freira Alvera de Virmundt (1617-49) como um modelo de piedade feminina cheia de 'virtude e perfeição'. O terceiro é dedicado ao jesuíta belga John Berchmans (1599-1621), lembrado como um 'jovem santo', e é traduzido de uma edição parisiense de 1826 de um texto publicado em 1706 por Nicholas Frizon (falecido em 1737).
